Guiding the Future of Young Men: The Lasting Impact of Faith-Based Education
When it comes to choosing the right school for a young man, many parents in the Mon Valley find their options limited. One option that offers a distinct choice for all parents: an education where academic excellence and preparation for college and career are deeply intertwined with moral values, character development, a nurturing of faith, and responsible citizenship, the Tom Johnson Boys’ Academy (TJBA).
What are the benefits of a faith-based education at TJBA? At our core, we emphasize ethical development, instilling principles like respect, responsibility for self and others, discipline, and honor. These values help to shape well-rounded young men who will carry integrity, resilience, perseverance, and service to family and community into their adulthood. Crucially, we are also dedicated to fostering their spiritual growth.
Like many faith-based schools, our curriculum is rigorous and we maintain high academic standards. Research has shown that faith-based schools surpass national academic standards by 12-20 points. Our small class sizes and dedicated teachers ensure a supportive, robust, challenging learning environment where every student is seen, heard, and supported. Small class sizes allow for more personalized, individual attention, fostering an environment where students can focus academically.
Ours in a close-knit community where students, parents, teachers and staff build meaningful and lifelong relationships. Within our community, young men become ethical leaders and responsible citizens as we actively support the spiritual journeys of our students. Through service projects and outreach programs, students learn the value of helping others and of having a positive impact on their families and community.
As a faith-based school, we offer a safe and carefully-structured setting that all but eliminates negative influences such as bullying and peer pressure. Studies have shown that boys, in particular, thrive in structured, disciplined environments. This allows students to focus 100% of their attention and energy on their academic and personal growth, as well as their spiritual formation. In addition, this highly-structured and disciplined approach contributes to developing strong study habits and a solid academic foundation for their future. Equally important, students are offered a space in which their faith can be strengthened and they can grow spiritually; integral to our daily life are opportunities such as morning worship, chapel, and prayer before meals, which intentionally nurture their faith.
Crucially, we encourage strong family engagement and recognize the importance of this collaboration between home and school. Parents and caregivers are invited to be more involved in their child’s education, and more importantly, are given the tools, support and guidance with which to do exactly that. This collaboration creates a supportive network that contributes to the overall well-being of the students.
Ultimately, the faith-based education provided by TJBA offers a genuinely holistic education that nurtures their minds, hearts and spirits. In fact, research has revealed that graduates of faith-based schools generally experience better outcomes in employment, wages, life satisfaction, and health compared to non-faith-based schools. By combining academic excellence and moral and spiritual development, we help to shape students into responsible, compassionate and confident individuals who are prepared for whatever life’s challenges the world throws at them with a strong foundation in faith..
Ultimately, the faith-based education at TJBA provides a truly holistic approach, nurturing minds, hearts, and spirits. Research suggests that graduates of faith-based schools often experience greater success in employment, earnings, life satisfaction, and health compared to their peers from non-faith-based schools. By intentionally integrating academic excellence with moral and, importantly, spiritual development, we empower students to become responsible, compassionate, and confident individuals ready to face life’s challenges with a strong foundation in faith.
It is critical to have choices. Without choices we feel trapped. In the case of the Tom Johnson Boys’ Academy, the choice seems clear. Choose TJBA and watch your young man grow in ways you may never have imagined they would have the opportunity to!
Why Standardized Tests Fail Students: Fixing a Broken System in Education
Imagine a classroom where curiosity is stifled, individuality is ignored, and learning is reduced to bubbling in answer sheets—this is the unfortunate reality of standardized test-driven education in too many schools.
In too many classrooms, students become test-takers rather than lifelong learners. In fact, the overemphasis on standardized test preparation has transformed education into a rigid, “one-size-fits-all” system that fails to nurture individual and diverse talents. A school’s success should be measured by the minds it ignites, not just the numbers it produces on a test score report. If, as our founder, the Reverend Tom Johnson, believed with great conviction, knowledge is power, then a test-prep-driven education is doing a great disservice to our students by reducing learning to a rigid set of predetermined answers.
According to the Center on Education Policy, on average, teachers estimate that they spend 14 days preparing students for standardized tests. Think about that. With this extra time (14 days), students could finish an entire math unit, or read a short novel. The truth is that spending so much time preparing for a standardized test shuts out the possibility of learning anything new or important – and there are plenty of new and important things our students could benefit from learning.
The unfortunate reality is that standardized tests exist for administrative, political, and financial purposes, not for educational ones. Test companies make billions. Politicians get elected by promising “better test results.” Administrators get funding to avoid harsh penalties by boosting test scores. Everyone benefits…except the students. Wouldn’t it make more sense to focus all of our available time in schools getting to know students well enough to teach them as powerfully as possible? We think so.
The Tom Johnson Boys’ Academy is emancipated from those kinds of concerns. That allows us to focus every available minute on the development of our students’ intellectual and personal growth. It gives us time to ensure that the young men who attend our school develop their character as much as they do their academic skills. We do not hesitate to measure our success by how many minds we ignite, how many students not only learn, but learn how to learn in order to be independent thinkers, and by how many students graduate and move on to the next phase of their lives fully prepared to succeed.
So for a moment, imagine a classroom where curiosity is continuously ignited, individuality is strengthened, and learning is not only an end goal, but a means for unlocking a limitless future.
Welcome to the Tom Johnson Boys’ Academy.
