Imagine a classroom where curiosity is stifled, individuality is ignored, and learning is reduced to bubbling in answer sheets—this is the unfortunate reality of standardized test-driven education in too many schools.

In too many classrooms, students become test-takers rather than lifelong learners. In fact, the overemphasis on standardized test preparation has transformed education into a rigid, “one-size-fits-all” system that fails to nurture individual and diverse talents. A school’s success should be measured by the minds it ignites, not just the numbers it produces on a test score report. If, as our founder, the Reverend Tom Johnson, believed with great conviction, knowledge is power, then a test-prep-driven education is doing a great disservice to our students by reducing learning to a rigid set of predetermined answers.

According to the Center on Education Policy, on average, teachers estimate that they spend 14 days preparing students for standardized tests. Think about that. With this extra time (14 days), students could finish an entire math unit, or read a short novel. The truth is that spending so much time preparing for a standardized test shuts out the possibility of learning anything new or important – and there are plenty of new and important things our students could benefit from learning.

The unfortunate reality is that standardized tests exist for administrative, political, and financial purposes, not for educational ones. Test companies make billions. Politicians get elected by promising “better test results.” Administrators get funding to avoid harsh penalties by boosting test scores. Everyone benefits…except the students. Wouldn’t it make more sense to focus all of our available time in schools getting to know students well enough to teach them as powerfully as possible? We think so.

The Tom Johnson Boys’ Academy is emancipated from those kinds of concerns. That allows us to focus every available minute on the development of our students’ intellectual and personal growth. It gives us time to ensure that the young men who attend our school develop their character as much as they do their academic skills. We do not hesitate to measure our success by how many minds we ignite, how many students not only learn, but learn how to learn in order to be independent thinkers, and by how many students graduate and move on to the next phase of their lives fully prepared to succeed.

So for a moment, imagine a classroom where curiosity is continuously ignited, individuality is strengthened, and learning is not only an end goal, but a means for unlocking a limitless future.

Welcome to the Tom Johnson Boys’ Academy.
